Palestinians enjoy their time on the beach of Deir al-Balah's sea, in the center of Gaza strip amid a hot day. STORYLINE: The beach is one of the few open public spaces in this densely populated city. The sea was once Gaza’s only escape, the one place in this tiny enclave where residents could depart from their entrapped lives, if only for an hour. But now a ceaseless conflict that seems to impinge on nearly every aspect of life here has claimed the Mediterranean, too. Because of skyrocketing levels of water pollution, attributable to political and economic turmoil, the 25-mile coastline is now another barrier in a place where barriers are all too common. One year after the bruising 11-day war between Israel and Hamas, the ruling faction of Gaza, which killed more than 260 Palestinians and 14 Israelis, the besieged Palestinian enclave is still working hard on its economic recovery even as Israel has partially reopened the crossings to allow thousands of Palestinians to work inside it and the construction materials into Gaza for its rebuilding in the aftermath of the war.
