STORYLINE: Today, Israeli occupation authorities released the prisoner Khalil Awawda, from the town of Idna, west of Hebron, who has been detained since December 27, 2021. The families of the prisoner Awawda reported that the occupation released their son from “Ofer” prison, through the military enclave checkpoint northwest of Jerusalem, noting that he had gone on an open hunger strike against his administrative detention for approximately six months. Al-Awawda, a father of four children, from the town of Idna in the Hebron Governorate in the south of the West Bank, had been subjected to administrative and arbitrary detention over the course of many years, during which he went on many hunger strikes for long months in rejection of administrative detention. Khalil Awawda spent a total of 12 years inside the occupation prisons, including 6 years in administrative detention. Days after his arrest in December 2021, he was transferred to administrative detention for 6 months. On March 3, 2022, Awawda began a hunger strike in rejection of his administrative detention, which he suspended after 111 days following promises to set a time limit for his arrest and release. Over the years, Israel has placed thousands of Palestinians in administrative detention for prolonged periods of time, without trying them, without informing them of the charges against them, and without allowing them or their counsel to examine the evidence.
