RESTRICTION SUMMARY: APAwire CLIENTS ONLY SHOTLIST: APAwire - APAwire CLIENTS ONLY, Gaza - 06 November 2022. A general view show the Gaza seaport amidst beach erosion 0.1 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Professor of Environment and Marine Sciences at the Islamic University of Gaza, Abdel Fattah Abed Rabbo 0.2 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Citizen Hosni Al-Ajrami 0.3 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Citizen Islam El Hamlawy STORYLINE: COP27 is the 27th annual UN meeting on climate. It will take place in Sharm el-Sheikh Today. They are referred to as COPs, which stands for "Conference of the Parties". The parties are the attending countries that signed up to the original UN climate agreement in 1992. UN climate summits are held every year, for governments to agree steps to limit global temperature rises. The biggest climate event of the year kicks in Egypt as a raft of challenges threaten global efforts to tame rising temperatures. Set against a backdrop of severe weather disasters, this year’s gathering collides with soaring energy costs, food insecurity and a looming debt crisis that undercuts resilience measures in peril-prone countries. Other complications include sharpening tensions between many of the world’s biggest climate polluters, a string of broken promises to lower emissions and failures to deliver money to people on the front lines of emissions-driven catastrophes. In light of the fast erosion, the most populated areas in the Gaza Strip are at risk, such as the ancient city of al-Balakhia in the northwest, al-Shati refugee camp west of Gaza City, the beaches of Deir al-Balah governorate in central Gaza, and some tourist hotels near the beach as well as the Swedish Village in southern Rafah in the south of the enclave. In previous years, the village, named after Swedish soldiers who were stationed there in the 1960s, was at risk of sinking, and the authorities had used simple resources to protect it, despite how difficult that task proved.
