RESTRICTION SUMMARY: APAwire CLIENTS ONLY SHOTLIST: APAwire - APAwire CLIENTS ONLY, Al-Bireh, 26 October 2021. Palestinians take part in a protest in solidarity with prisoners on hunger strikes at Israeli jails, in front of Red cross office in the West Bank city of Al-Bireh. 0.1 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Qadri Abu Bakr, head of the Prisoners and Ex-Prisoners Affairs Commission. 0.2 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Sahar Francis, director of the Addameer Foundation for Prisoner Support and Human Rights. STORYLINE: Israel renewed today the administrative detention for six more months of Hisham Abu Hawwash, who has been on hunger strike for 71 days demanding an end to his detention without charge or trial, according to Abu Hawwash’s attorney Jawad Boulus. He denounced the renewal of the administrative detention order at a time Abu Hawwash has put his life on the line in order to have his current detention period come to an end and be freed. This decision explains the degree of vengeance Israel has against Abu Hawwash and the other hunger strikers despite their deteriorating health condition, said Boulus, who explained that there are no serious offers regarding their case and that renewing their detention orders is the answer provided for all those demanding their release from prison. Abu Hawwash, 39, from Dura in the Hebron district, has been in detention since October of last year. He is married and a father of five children. His health condition is deteriorating as a result of the long hunger strike. While Abu Hawwash has been on hunger strike for 71 days demanding his freedom, Kayed Fasfous has been on hunger strike for 104 days, Miqdad Qawasmi for 97 days and Alaa Araj for 80 days. In addition, Shadi Abu Aker has been on hunger strike for 63 days and Ayyad Harimi for 34 days, all demanding an end to their prolonged administrative detention. "In violation of international law, Israel continues to use administrative detention to imprison more than 500 Palestinians -- including six children -- without charges, without trials, without convictions, all based on classified secret information that the detainees have no access to," the experts said. "They have no recourse to challenging these undisclosed allegations, and they do not know when, or if, they are going to be released." Currently, Israel is holding over 450 Palestinians in administrative detention, deemed illegal by international law, most of them former prisoners who spent years in prison for their resistance of the Israeli occupation. Over the years, Israel has placed thousands of Palestinians in administrative detention for prolonged periods of time, without trying them, without informing them of the charges against them, and without allowing them or their counsel to examine the evidence.
