APAwire - APAwire CLIENTS ONLY,Jerusalem- 13 May 2021. Palestinian Muslim worshippers attend Eid al-Fitr prayer to mark the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, at al-Aqsa mousque coumpound in Jerusalem city.
STORYLINE
Nearly 100,000 Palestinians gathered on the Temple Mount on Thursday morning for prayers on Eid al-Fitr, the concluding festival breaking the month of daytime fasting during Ramadan, with video showing many chanting "Oh God, give victory to Gaza" while waving Palestinian flags and banners.
Large banners portraying leaders from the Gaza Strip were hung up in front of the Dome of the Rock on Thursday morning. The prayers took place as Israel and Hamas continued to exchange attacks with fresh barrages of rockets raining down on Israel throughout Wednesday night.
According to the official Palestinian news agency WAFA, Abbas limited Eid to religious rites and ordered that flags be flown at half-mast in remembrance of the Palestinians who were martyred earlier in the day.
The deadly exchange of fire between Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip and the Israeli military has escalated significantly, with the UN fearing a "full-scale war". Israel has carried out hundreds of air strikes on Gaza, destroying three tower blocks and killing Hamas officials.
The Ministry of Health said 83 people have been killed so far in three days of non-stop Israeli airstrikes, including 17 children and 7 women, and more than 487 injured.
