Palestinian girl Hala al-Shawaf, 11, lies on a bed at Nasser Medical Complex in Khan Younis, southern Gaza Strip, on October 22, 2026, where she is receiving treatment after being wounded in the neck by Israeli gunfire, leaving her partially paralyzed, while reading the Quran inside her family’s displacement tent. Hala, who dreams of becoming an interior designer, is awaiting a medical referral to travel abroad for treatment in the hope of regaining her ability to walk, amid tight restrictions on medical evacuations and border crossing closures.
