Palestinians walk past closed shops during a general strike in the Old City of Jerusalem, 22 May 2017. Israeli authorities earlier had installed metal detectors at the entrance to the Al-Aqsa compound after a shooting attack carried out by Israeli Arabs on 14 July against Israeli police during which two Israeli policemen and three attackers were killed. The mufti of Jerusalem had called Palestinian Muslims not to go through the electronic gates and to reject all procedures that change the historic situation of the mosque. The measures reportedly were prohibiting Friday prayers for Muslims at the mosque for the first time in 48 years. Photo by Ameer Abed Rabbo
