RESTRICTION SUMMARY: APAwire CLIENTS ONLY SHOTLIST: APAwire - APAwire CLIENTS ONLY, Gaza - 17 March 2022. Palestinians attend the launching ceremony of the electronic application "Mashatuna" to combat violence against women, in Gaza city. 0.1 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Andaleeb Adwan, Director of the Community Media Center. 0.2 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Maryam Al-Bursh, Director of the Family and Childhood Department in the Palestinian Police. 0.3 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Nadia Madi, Head of the Public Relations and Media Unit at the Gaza Mental Health Program. STORYLINE: An average of 22 women were lost to domestic violence in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip every year from 2012 to 2019, according to the Palestinian Center for Policy Research and Strategic Studies. The number shot up to 38 in 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic forced people to stay home, according to the Women's Center for Legal Aid and Counseling. Six women have died from domestic violence so far this year, including one in the West Bank and five in the Gaza Strip, according to the Palestinian Center for Human Rights. The data shows that the victims had diverse social statuses and were killed in many different ways. The common denominator is that they are all subjected to physical and psychological abuse. Palestinian women live with outdated laws dating back to the Ottoman, British, Jordanian and Egyptian eras that many argue are no longer relevant in 2021. Palestine has joined several international agreements on women's rights in the past decade, including the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women in 2014.
