RESTRICTION SUMMARY: APAwire CLIENTS ONLY SHOTLIST: APAwire - APAwire CLIENTS ONLY, Al-Bireh - 13 September 2022. Palestinians take part in a protest in solidarity with Palestinian prisoner in Israeli jails suffering from cancer Nasser Abu Hamid, in the West Bank city of Al-Bireh. 0.1 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Helmy Al-Araj, Director of the Center for Defense of Liberties and Civil Rights. 0.2 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Naji Abu Hamid, brother of the sick prisoner Nasser Abu Hamid. 0.3 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Melina Ansari, International Lobbying and Advocacy Officer at Addameer Prisoner Support and Human Rights Foundation. STORYLINE: As cancer-stricken prisoner Nasser Abu Hmeid, who is serving five life terms, is fighting for his life, the Palestinian Prisoner Society (PPS) said today that 73 freedom fighters have died from medical negligence who were among 231 Palestinians who have died while incarcerated in Israel since the occupation started in 1967. “The crime of medical negligence (slow killing) and torture were the most prominent policies that led to the death of prisoners,” the PPS said in a statement. It said some 600 Palestinians serving time in the Israeli prisons have been diagnosed over the past years with serious illnesses, including about 200 suffering from chronic diseases, including 23 prisoners with tumors and cancer of various degrees, the most serious is Nasser Abu Hmeid, who is at risk of death at any moment. The PPS accused the Israel Prison Services (IPS) of intentionally stalling in transferring ill prisoners, mainly those diagnosed with cancer, to hospitals in a way to speed up their death, adding that many cancer patients were not informed of their situation until cancer had reached an advanced and deadly stage.
