STORYLINE
The socioeconomic situation in the Gaza Strip has been severely weakened as a result of the Israeli offensive in May.
Gaza’s housing ministry said on Thursday that 16,800 housing units had been damaged. Of those, 1,800 had become unfit for living and 1,000 were destroyed completely.
According to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics, the unemployment rate in Gaza hit 56 percent. Figures of a Gaza-based committee resisting the Israeli blockade showed that around 83 percent of the Gaza Strip's 2 million population live below the poverty line.
