STORYLINE
The family of the Banat called the human rights and legal institutions to withdraw from the investigation committee formed by the PA and refused to participate in it, and demanded that they form an independent investigation committee.
The family of Nizar Banat said he was beaten to death, sparking condemnation from human rights activists, marches in the West Bank and Gaza strip, and calls for an inquiry, including from the European Union, who said they were "shocked and saddened".
Palestinian Prime Minister Mohammed Shtayyah on Monday said whoever was involved in Nizar Banat's death would be referred to the competent judicial authorities.
"We ask the investigation committee to complete its report within the next two days," he said.
The Palestinian Authority (PA) said it had formed a high-level committee to investigate Banat's death.
His family said he was beaten in custody. An initial forensic examination concluded the cause of the death was "unnatural."
Thousands of Palestinians have taken to the streets in recent days to protest against President Mahmoud Abbas and the PA. They have been violently dispersed by authorities.
Abbas' popularity plunged after he called off the first elections in 15 years in April and was side-lined by the Gaza war in May.
