STORYLINE
Tens of thousands of Muslim worshippers have gathered at a sacred Jerusalem plaza for the first Friday prayers of Ramadan after coronavirus lockdowns kept the site off-limits last year. About 70,000 faithful, most of them Arab citizens of Israel, prayed in al-Aqsa mosque, the third holiest site in Islam.
A limited number of Palestinian residents who carry both a travel permits and a vaccination document, are allowed to cross into Israel to attend the prayers at al-Aqsa mosque, due to the coronavirus pandemic
Friday prayers during the holy month usually draw hundreds of thousands of Muslim worshipers to al-Aqsa mosque from Israel and the West Bank. This year, however, due to coronavirus restrictions, just 10,000 vaccinated Palestinians received permits to enter Israel.
Israel’s military liaison to the Palestinians, COGAT, said Tuesday that up to 10,000 vaccinated Palestinians will be allowed to pray Friday at the Al-Aqsa Mosque to mark the first Friday of Ramadan.
