APAwire - APAwire CLIENTS ONLY, Gaza - 21 December 2020. Palestinian members of the Union of Agricultural Work Committees take part to throw wheat seeds during the start of the wheat growing season on farmers' lands near the Israeli border, in Khan Younis in the southern of Gaza strip on December 21, 2020.
STORYLINE
Recent years have revealed a steady decline in the area of agricultural land in the Gaza Strip to currently about 100,000 Dunum, for many reasons. The most important include establishment of the buffer zone of about 17,000 Dunum along the Gaza Strip’s border with Israel, comprising ca. 15% of the –generally very fertile- agricultural land in the Gaza Strip. This buffer zone is classified as “Access Restricted Area (ARA)” and runs from Beit Hanoun in the north of the Gaza Strip to Rafah in the south, making access to agricultural land in this area, traditionally famous for the cultivation of tomatoes, potatoes, watermelons and onions amongst others, unsafe and a danger to the farmers.
