Palestinian demonstrators hold pictures of prisoners held in Israeli jails, including jailed Palestinian leader Marwan Barghouti, during a rally in the occupied West Bank city of Hebron on April 16, 2026 to mark Prisoners' Day and to protest against Israeli parliament's approval of a new death penalty bill for Palestinians convicted of deadly attacks. Under the new law, passed in Israeli parliament late on March 30, Palestinians in the West Bank convicted by military courts of carrying out deadly attacks classified as "terrorism" will face the death penalty as a default sentence. Because Palestinians in the territory are automatically tried in Israeli military courts, the measure effectively creates a separate and harsher legal track. Photo by Mamoun Wazwaz\ apaimages
