Palestinians run for a cover from teargas canisters fired by Israeli border police near a barbed-wire gate part of the controversial Israeli separation fence between the West Bank town of Bethlehem and Jerusalem, after an attempt by Palestinian men to sneak in and reach the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in Jerusalem through it, following an order by Israeli police two days earlier to prevent Palestinians from crossing to pray on the fourth and last Friday of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan due to a rise in violence at the site, on July 1, 2016. Israeli authorities announced on June 28 they were closing Jerusalem's flashpoint Al-Aqsa mosque compound to non-Muslim visitors until the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan after a series of clashes between worshippers and Israeli police. Clashes have been taking place every morning since the beginning of the week over Jewish visits to the site, with youths throwing stones and security forces firing tear gas and sponge-tipped bullets.
