Palestinian supporters of the Fatah movement attend a rally prior to the Student Council elections at Birzeit University, on the outskirts of the city of Ramallah in the West Bank on May 6, 2014. The Student Council elections , which will take place on May 7, will pit student supporters of the top two political movements Hamas and Fatah, days after the intra-Palestinian reconciliation agreement. On April 23, the Palestine Liberation Organisation (PLO) -- internationally recognised as the sole representative of the Palestinian people -- and the Islamist Hamas which rules the Gaza Strip signed a reconciliation agreement.
