Palestinians carry the body of Fatima Bernawi during her funeral in Gaza city. 0.1 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Gaza Governorate, Ibrahim Abu Al-Naga 0.2 SOUNDBITE (in Arabic) Coordinator of the Joint Refugee Committee Mahmoud Khalaf STORYLINE: Fatima Bernawi died this Thursday, November 3, at the Palestinian Hospital in Cairo, after her health deteriorated in recent days. Bernawi was the first female prisoner of the Fatah movement in the prisons of the Israeli. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas instructed his embassy in Cairo to carry out all necessary measures for Bernawi's funeral. Born in Jerusalem in 1939, Bernawi was the daughter of a Nigerian father and a Jordanian-Palestinian mother. After leaving the city, her family returned to Jerusalem in 1960 and she settled in the city's African quarter. She joined the Fatah Movement when she turned 18, following in the footsteps of her father, who participated in the 1936 Arab uprising in Palestine, and was an active fighter during the Palestinian Freedom Movement of the mid-1960s. In 1967 he carried out an operation, foiled by Israelis, against the Zion cinema in West Jerusalem. After that she returned to Qalqilia, where she worked as a nurse. She was arrested for a decade and released on November 11, 1979. She returned to the Gaza Strip from exile in 1994 to lead the women's police force. She received the Military Order of the Star of Honor from Mahmoud Abbas in 2015. Footage by /APA
