APAwire - APAwire CLIENTS ONLY, Ramallah – 11 July 2021. Palestinian demonstrators take part in a protest against death of late activist Nizar Banat who died in late June following arrested by Palestinian Authority security forces, in the West Bank city of Ramallah.
STORYLINE
Banat, a 43-year-old known for social media videos denouncing alleged corruption within the PA, died on June 24, 2021 shortly after security forces stormed his house, beat him and dragged him away, his family said.
The family of Nizar Banat said he was beaten to death, sparking condemnation from human rights activists, marches in the West Bank and Gaza strip, and calls for an inquiry, including from the European Union, who said they were "shocked and saddened".
Thousands of Palestinians have taken to the streets in recent days to protest against President Mahmoud Abbas and the PA. They have been violently dispersed by authorities.
Abbas' popularity plunged after he called off the first elections in 15 years in April and was side-lined by the Gaza war in May.
